Prevent Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is the 3rd most common female cancer worldwide but it is potentially preventable. If cancer has already developed and is detected at the earliest stage,, the results of treatment are good with more than 90% 5 - year survival.
In most cases before cervical cancer develops, there is a pre-cancerous stage that can be detected by the PAP smear. If this pre-cancerous stage is detected and adequately treated, cervical cancer can be prevented. Women with pre-cancerous lesions usually have no symptoms therefore regular PAP smear screening is recommended to detect these lesions.
Studies have identified risk factors associated with cervical cancer have shown that
cervical cancers is closely linked to:
- Certain sexual behaviours
- Human papilomavirus (HPV) infection
- Immunosuppressive disorders such as HIV/AIDS
- Failure to undergo PAP Smear test screening
